ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
Through our partnership with the Carbon Trust and implementation of environmental best practices, The Clandeboye Lodge Hotel is on target to reduce its carbon emissions by 100 tonnes on an annual basis. To achieve this we realise that we need the help of our guests, employees and suppliers to continue to improve our environmental sustainability and therefore – in a small way – helping us to reduce the effects of climate change.
Our low carbon initiatives to date include:
- Raise awareness of energy conservation amongst the hotel’s employees and motivate them to reduce waste
- Installation of motion sensors for lighting in guest room corridors, production areas and stores
- Monitoring exterior temperatures to prevent unnecessary heating and air- conditioning in guest rooms, conference & banqueting suites and public areas
- Programming of refrigeration equipment to prevent unnecessary cooling
- Installation of smart energy metering equipment to monitor energy consumption
- Installation of thermally efficient Kingspan Kooltherm cavity and roofing boards insulation
- Replacing bulk hot water storage systems with instantaneous generation of hot water
- Minimising waste by recycling glass, paper, cardboard and plastics
Our Guests Contribution
Every year, more than 15,000 guests stay in our hotel, while a further 70,000 attend events or dine in the Clanbrasserie. Whilst staying with us, we ask guests to build on our environmental efforts by switching off lights and heating when leaving their room, re-use towels when possible and unless requested otherwise, we’ll refresh bed linen only after the second night’s stay, minimising the environmental impact that laundering creates.
Our Employees Contribution
At the recruitment and induction stages, we explain our environmental philosophy to all new employees. Jointly we identify carbon reduction opportunities through energy, waste and water management and smart metering initiatives. By reducing associated costs, we can as a team make a small contribution to reducing climate change whilst maintaining competitive, value for money services for our customers.
Our Suppliers Contribution
By sourcing quality, seasonal ingredients from local producers for our Clanbrasserie restaurant and events menus, we’re actively supporting the use of environmentally sustainable commodities.
By implementing best practice procurement and logistics processes for food, non-food and beverage commodities, we have also been able to reduce the frequency of deliveries and associated CO2 emissions.
Renewable energy at Clandeboye Lodge

The Clandeboye Lodge has agreed a new contract with ESBIE for the supply of renewable, environmentally friendly energy. By choosing this resource, the hotel has further strengthened its strategic commitment to the environment. Last year, carbon emissions were reduced by in excess of 100 tonnes as a result of a £43K investment in water and space heating equipment, in conjunction with the Carbon Trust.
60% of the hotel's energy demand will now be provided through the sourcing of tidal energy produced through ESBIE's partnership with Marine Current Turbines, who operate the SeaGen turbine facility in Strangford Lough, and from local wind farms.

According to Alan Clarke, NITB Chief Executive, "the Northern Ireland Tourism Awards, in association with Diageo Northern Ireland, are the premier industry accolades and winning one makes a clear statement to both competitors and customers about the success of your business".
BeeKindTM at the Clandeboye Lodge

The Clandeboye Lodge has launched a new range of guest supplies, presented in environmentally friendly packaging, with unequalled skin-friendly formulations. The BeeKind Collection is an environmental alternative to plastic bottles with the paper bottle representing a 59% reduction in packaging material by weight, as well as a 92% reduction in waste space after use compared to rigid plastic bottles.
